Spikes
Spikes considers texture, organic forms and the attractiveness of mannerism. With an emphasis on motifs and dramatic compositions, this series highlights the splendor of California cacti, whose shape and sophisticated patterns can be vectors of formal exploration. The plants’ repetitive designs allow for an intricate use of lines, dots, and strokes, while the subject’s positioning in the frame draw parallels with the natural environment, as they seem to touch the ground. In contrast with the multidimensional and colorful treatment of the cacti, the stripped-down geometric background gives the images an overall sense of motionlessness, of being stuck in time.
